NDSU Foundation staffing update
Vice president of alumni and donor connections

Bethany Hardwig will join the NDSU Foundation as vice president of alumni and donor connections. She holds a master's degree in legal studies from the University of Utah and is working to obtain a doctor of education in organizational change and leadership. Her lifelong journey has been centered around higher education; her father was a college president, and most recently, she spent more than three years in advancement and alumni affairs at the University of Utah.

Bethany describes herself as an entrepreneurial leader with a high sense of social responsibility. She says it is "important to acknowledge and address the realities of students pursuing a degree at this time — including the perception of value, the burden of debt, and the realities of navigating in a post-pandemic world," and she sees how "philanthropy changes lives, cultures, institutions, communities, and individuals."

Her experience as a leadership annual giving officer, an executive assistant to a vice president of advancement, and a communications and event manager, along with her most recent position as director of special projects and outreach at the University of Utah, will empower Bethany to make innovative and significant contributions in support of the Foundation's mission.

Philanthropy in action
The man who built a home for heritage at NDSU

Without documentation, what will future generations remember about their ancestors? This is a question Michael Miller began asking decades ago. As the son of two German-Russian immigrants, Michael grew up speaking German and eating kase knoephla, but he doesn't know many stories about his ancestors' daily lives or experiences because they weren't shared.

"In the case of my parents, it's a good example of, how much did they ask of their ancestors, of their parents?" Michael said. "I think it shows the importance of doing oral interviews and documenting your living ancestors … for today and for future generations."

In 1978, Michael founded the Germans from Russia Heritage Collection (GRHC) at NDSU to preserve the stories, heritage, and culture of the Germans from Russia. In 2019, he decided to give back and invest in the collection he spent most of his life building from the ground up. Using his IRA, he established an endowment through the NDSU Foundation for the benefit of the GRHC.

Learn more about Michael's legacy and get a glimpse of the past — and future — of the Germans from Russia Heritage Collection in the NDSU Foundation Magazine.

Student selected for astronaut scholarship

Jacob Sundberg, a mechanical engineering student at NDSU, recently received the prestigious Astronaut Scholarship for the 2023-24 academic year. The Astronaut Scholarship Foundation was created to ensure that the U.S. maintains its leadership in science and technology by supporting some of the best science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) college students.

During the past three years, Jacob has contributed to important research and development projects at NDSU. He assisted in research geared toward the development of high-performing composite material 3D printers and worked with compression molding composite manufacturing and robotic coding.

"The projects I've been involved with will prepare me for success as they have given me hands-on experience for what it takes to be constantly working towards success in the development of new technologies that will better serve us in the future," Jacob said. "I will implement the experience I've gained to help pave the way to a successful career."

Learn more about how NDSU's College of Engineering encouraged Jacob to always do his best work on the NDSU News webpage.
